Dumka, Jharkhand, September 12, 2025: A 12-year-old boy took his own life in Mathakesho village, under the jurisdiction of Seraiyahat police station, Dumka district, on Thursday afternoon, following a heated argument with his mother over his demand for a smartphone.

According to Seraiyahat police station officer Rajendra Yadav, the boy frequently clashed with his mother, Badrika Devi, over his persistent requests for a smartphone. Citing the family's strained financial situation, Badrika Devi was unable to fulfill her son’s demand. The boy’s father, a contract laborer working in Bengaluru, was not present at the time of the incident.

On Thursday morning, after returning from school, the boy engaged in another argument with his mother regarding the smartphone. Later that afternoon, after returning from a nearby field, he was found hanging from the roof of their thatched house with a cloth.

The body has been sent for a postmortem examination at Phulo Jano Medical College and Hospital in Dumka, police confirmed. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

This heartbreaking event underscores the growing pressures on young individuals and the need for greater awareness and support for mental health and family communication, especially in economically challenged households.
