Udupi: The concluding program of the Ideal Neighbors National Campaign, organized by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Udupi District, was held today at Jamia Masjid, Udupi. The event witnessed inspiring participation from over 700 people from various parts of the district.
The gathering highlighted the Islamic moral framework for maintaining healthy neighborhood relations, promoting communal harmony, and strengthening human values in society.
“If your neighbor does not feel safe from you, you cannot be a believer.”
— Janab Mohammed Kunhi
Addressing the audience, Janab Mohammed Kunhi, State Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Karnataka, emphasized that relationships with neighbors are an essential part of a Muslim’s faith. Quoting the Prophet ﷺ, he said:
“If your neighbor cannot live without fear because of you, then you cannot be a true believer.”
He explained that human beings are deeply dependent on relationships, and Islam has always guided people to build a compassionate and responsible society. In the modern era—despite global connectivity—people often remain disconnected from those living next door. He stressed that the Qur’an places immense emphasis on relationships, even more than on acts of worship.
Janab Kunhi highlighted important teachings of the Prophet ﷺ about neighbors:
Not letting the aroma of one’s food reach the neighbor without sharing it
Giving what we love, not leftover or unwanted items
Respecting neighbors irrespective of caste or religion
Not building structures that block a neighbor’s light or air
He reminded the audience that Muslims have historically upheld noble values—such as care for elders, social service, and the prohibition of harmful practices like running bars. These values, he said, continue to earn respect for the Muslim community despite widespread misinformation and Islamophobia. “This culture must be protected and strengthened,” he urged.
“Muslims must actively restore trust and understanding in society.”
— Br. Ashfaq Sharif
Former SIO National President Br. Ashfaq Sharif addressed the gathering and spoke on the need for Muslims—especially the youth—to play a constructive role in society. He stressed that building trust, engaging with local communities, and upholding Islamic character are essential in today’s polarized environment.
He reminded the audience that Islam teaches service beyond boundaries and that Muslims must be known for kindness, integrity, and excellence. Encouraging youth participation, he called for proactive involvement in neighborhood welfare and community bonding.
