New Delhi, September 24, 2025 – Tensions continue to rise across India as protests erupt in response to police actions targeting individuals displaying signboards with the message “I Love Muhammad.” At the forefront of this controversy, Azad Samaj Party (ASP) chief and Nagina MP Chandrasekhar Azad has issued a bold challenge to authorities, daring them to arrest him for expressing the same sentiment during a public rally in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.
Azad’s Defiant Stand
Addressing a charged gathering, Azad condemned what he described as selective enforcement of the law and a direct attack on religious freedom guaranteed under Articles 25 and 26 of the Indian Constitution. “It is said that our Constitution grants us religious freedom, but today, if someone says ‘I love Muhammad,’ a case is filed against them and they are thrown into jail,” Azad stated. He further criticized the authorities for denying permissions for events celebrating figures like Lord Buddha while allowing those in power to hold events without restrictions.
In a direct challenge to the authorities, Azad declared, “I say ‘I Love Muhammad’, put me behind bars. I want to see how much space is there in your jail. Anyone can love any ideology and character. You are not the contractor of anyone.” He also expressed solidarity with revolutionary figures like Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, emphasizing his commitment to fighting inequality.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy began on September 9, 2025, when police in Kanpur filed a case against 25 Muslims for installing a signboard that read “I Love Muhammad.” The First Information Report (FIR) triggered widespread outrage within the Muslim community, prompting peaceful marches and demonstrations across the country. Protesters carried placards and banners echoing the same message in a show of unity and defiance.
However, these protests have not been without conflict. Clashes between demonstrators and police have been reported in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand, leading to dozens of arrests and hundreds booked in connection with the demonstrations.
Political Support Grows
Azad’s remarks have resonated with several political leaders who have rallied behind the campaign, condemning the police crackdown and defending the right to express religious devotion. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned the legality of the arrests, stating, “I cannot understand how these three words can be the cause of arrests. Only someone mentally unwell can make a case out of these three words. How is writing ‘I Love Muhammad’ unlawful? Do other religions not write for their religious figures and Gods?”
Similarly, All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has voiced strong support, asserting that saying “I Love Muhammad” is not a crime. Owaisi has expressed his readiness to face any consequences for affirming his faith, further amplifying the campaign’s message.

The “I Love Muhammad” campaign has sparked a broader debate about religious freedom and equality under the law in India. As protests continue, many are calling on the courts to intervene and clarify the legality of the police actions.
