New Delhi, September 8, 2025: Retired Delhi High Court Justice S Muralidhar has described the events following the verdict in the Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute case as “unforgivable institutional forgetfulness”. In his speech, he said that constitutional institutions failed to prevent the tragic events that followed the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992.
Speaking at a law conference in New Delhi, Justice S Muralidhar spoke about the Ayodhya verdict and its implications. "The events of 1992 have left a deep scar on the social fabric of the country. We have failed to uphold our institutional responsibility to prevent such incidents," he said.
Admitting that the Ayodhya case has had a long-term impact on India's legal system, he stressed that the courts and the government should act with utmost caution while handling such sensitive matters. "The judiciary should not only work within the framework of law, but also keep social harmony in mind," he advised.
Justice S Muralidhar called on constitutional institutions to take their duty seriously to prevent such incidents from recurring in future. “If we do not learn from history, we are likely to repeat the same mistakes,” he warned
