Mangaluru, Oct 18: A case has been registered at the CEN police station after a man lost Rs 64,000 when his mobile phone was hacked following a click on an e-payment challan link.
According to the complainant, he visited the city on October 5 to meet a friend. That evening, he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number containing a link related to an e-payment challan. Later that night, he clicked the link to verify it, unknowingly allowing hackers to gain control of his entire mobile device.
The fraudsters accessed UPI-based applications on his phone and intercepted OTPs sent for various logins. Subsequently, Rs 60,000 and Rs 4,000 were fraudulently transferred in two separate transactions without his knowledge.
The complainant has urged the authorities to take strict legal action against the perpetrators of the scam.
