Karkala, Sept. 29: Two young men drowned in the Suvarna River while swimming with friends on Tuesday afternoon at Hermunde in Hirgana village, Karkala taluk.
The deceased have been identified as Bharath Poojary (29) and Harshan Acharya (23) from Hirgana village.
As they were off work, a group of five friends had walked about two kilometers along a rugged path via Mangilaru to reach the Suvarna River. It is reported that Bharath and Harshan ventured into a deep section of the water and subsequently drowned.
Upon learning of the incident, fire force personnel trekked approximately three kilometers to reach the site. A recovery operation lasting over three hours was conducted with the assistance of locals, and both bodies were retrieved. The operation was led by Station Officer Sanjeev Devadiga.
The deceased, Bharath, supported his family by working as a painter. He had dreamt of building his own home, and the construction had already reached the slab-casting stage. His untimely death has come as a shock to his family, who were eagerly anticipating the housewarming ceremony.
