New Delhi, October 5, 2025: In a significant relief for highway commuters, the Government of India has revised toll payment rules effective November 15, 2025. Vehicles without a valid or functional FASTag will no longer be charged double the toll if payments are made digitally.

Under the amended National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), non-FASTag users can pay via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at 1.25 times the standard toll fee. However, cash payments will continue to incur double the standard toll, as per the existing rule.

For example, if the standard toll is Rs 100, non-FASTag users paying in cash will be charged Rs 200, while those using UPI will pay Rs 125.

The government stated that this change aims to promote digital transactions, reduce cash handling at toll plazas, and enhance efficiency and transparency in toll collection across National Highways. Officials noted that the measure will help reduce congestion at toll gates, encourage cashless travel, and offer a fair alternative for commuters yet to adopt FASTag or facing issues with existing tags.

Set to be implemented nationwide from November 15, 2025, the rule has been welcomed as a practical, commuter-friendly step that balances digital innovation with public convenience.
